Patna is a long city that follows the Ganga from Danapur in the west to Patna City in the east, and where you rent decides how much of your day goes into traffic. Start with where you need to be every morning (office, college, coaching or hospital), then pick from the areas around it. Here is how the main residential areas compare for people who rent.

Boring Road and Shri Krishna Puri

Central, busy and well connected. Boring Road has shops, banks, restaurants, schools and coaching institutes within walking distance, and Shri Krishna Puri next to it is a quieter residential pocket with the same convenience.

Good for: working people who want to be in the middle of everything, students at nearby colleges and coaching centres, and small families. Expect more traffic and less parking than in the newer areas to the west.

Kankarbagh

One of the largest planned residential colonies in Patna, south of Patna Junction. It has its own markets, schools, clinics and a steady supply of flats and rooms of every size, which makes it one of the easiest places to find something to rent.

Good for: families and anyone who wants plenty of choice. Some low-lying lanes collect water after heavy monsoon rain, so ask about it when you visit (more on that in our visit checklist).

Patliputra Colony and the north-west

Wide roads, older bungalows and newer apartment buildings, with Patliputra Junction railway station nearby. Areas around it such as Kurji and Digha have been growing quickly since the bridges across the Ganga opened the north bank.

Good for: families and senior professionals who want a calmer neighbourhood within reach of the city centre.

Bailey Road, Raja Bazar and Sheikhpura

Bailey Road runs west from the city centre past government offices, the High Court area, IGIMS hospital and the airport side of town. Raja Bazar and Sheikhpura sit along it and are full of apartment buildings.

Good for: government employees, hospital staff at IGIMS and anyone whose work is on the west side of the city.

Saguna More, Danapur and Gola Road

Further west, around the Danapur cantonment, a lot of the city's newer apartment buildings have come up in the last decade. Flats here are often newer and roomier, with lifts, parking and power backup more common than in the older colonies.

Good for: families who want a newer building, people working in Danapur or the western side of the city, and anyone happy to drive or ride into the centre.

Phulwari Sharif and the AIIMS side

South-west of the centre, Phulwari Sharif is where AIIMS Patna stands, and the lanes around it have rooms, shared rooms and flats let to doctors, nursing staff, students and patients' families. We wrote a separate guide to renting near AIIMS Patna.

Rajendra Nagar, Ashok Rajpath and old Patna

The older eastern half of the city: Rajendra Nagar with its railway terminal, Ashok Rajpath with Patna University, PMCH and NIT Patna, and the coaching lanes of Musallahpur and Mahendru. Rents for rooms are often lower here, and everything is close, but buildings are older and roads are crowded.

Good for: students and anyone working at PMCH, Patna University or in the old city. Rajendra Nagar was among the worst-hit areas in the 2019 floods, so check the building and the lane carefully in the monsoon.

How to choose

  • Do the trip to work or college at rush hour before you decide. A few kilometres in Patna can take a long time at 9 am.
  • Visit once after rain if you can, or ask neighbours whether the lane floods.
  • Check water supply, the electricity meter and mobile signal in the flat itself, not just the area.
  • Compare the full monthly cost: rent, electricity, maintenance and parking, not the rent alone.

Questions people ask

Which areas of Patna are good for families?

Kankarbagh, Patliputra Colony, Shri Krishna Puri, and the newer apartment buildings around Bailey Road, Saguna More and Danapur are popular with families for their schools, markets and quieter streets.

Which areas of Patna flood in the monsoon?
