Every year a lot of students come to Patna for college, coaching or competitive exam preparation. Most of them rent a room, alone or with a friend. A good room is quiet, safe, close to class and doesn't eat up your budget. Here is what to look for.

Where students usually live

Pick the area by your daily class, not by what friends recommend. Our guide to Patna's areas explains each one.

  • Boring Road and nearby lanes: close to many coaching institutes and colleges, with plenty of food and stationery shops.
  • Musallahpur, Mahendru and Ashok Rajpath: the old coaching and university belt near Patna University, PMCH and NIT Patna. Cheaper rooms, older buildings, busy streets.
  • Kankarbagh and Rajendra Nagar: residential, with rooms in family houses and good market access.

Single room or shared room?

A shared room, where you rent one bed in a room for two to four people, costs the least and suits you if you are out most of the day. A single room gives you quiet to study and keep your own hours. If you are preparing for an exam, many students find the quiet worth the extra cost.

Ask these before you pay anything

  • What exactly is included: electricity, water, Wi-Fi, a bed, a table, a fan?
  • How electricity is billed: a separate meter, or a share of the building's bill?
  • Is there a gate closing time, and are guests allowed?
  • How many people share the bathroom?
  • How much is the deposit, and when is it returned?
  • Is there a written agreement, and a receipt for every month's rent?

Papers you will need

Usually a photo ID (a masked Aadhaar is enough), your college or coaching ID, a passport-size photo, and a parent's or guardian's phone number. Owners in Patna are expected to register tenants with the local police, so keep these ready. The renting guide has the full list.
