Moving to Patna for a transfer or a new job? The first month goes much easier if you rent in the right part of the city and have your papers ready. Here is a practical plan.

Week 1: stay short, look around

If you can, spend the first few days in a hotel or with friends and visit flats in person. Make the trip from each area to your office at the time you will actually travel. Patna's traffic is heaviest on the main roads through the centre (Bailey Road, Boring Road, Fraser Road and Ashok Rajpath) in the morning and evening.

Pick an area by your office

Our guide to Patna's areas has more on each.

  • Government offices, the secretariat or the High Court: Bailey Road, Raja Bazar, Shastri Nagar.
  • Offices in the centre (Fraser Road, Exhibition Road, Gandhi Maidan): Boring Road, Shri Krishna Puri, Patliputra Colony.
  • Danapur side or the cantonment: Saguna More, Danapur, Gola Road.
  • Hospitals: Phulwari Sharif for AIIMS, Sheikhpura for IGIMS, Ashok Rajpath for PMCH.

Getting around

Autos and e-rickshaws go almost everywhere, app cabs and bike taxis work across the city, and Patna Metro is being built in stages. Most people who stay long term buy or bring a two-wheeler, so ask about parking when you look at flats.

Week 2: rent and move in

The full list is in our renting guide for Patna.

  • Keep ready: photo ID (masked Aadhaar), PAN, your offer or appointment letter or company ID, recent salary slips and a passport-size photo.
  • Read the rent agreement before paying the deposit. It should list rent, deposit, notice period and who pays electricity, water and maintenance.
  • The owner registers you with the local police station (tenant verification); give them what they need quickly.
  • Note the meter readings and photograph the flat on the day you move in.

Weeks 3 and 4: settle in

  • Gas: ask whether the building has piped gas; otherwise transfer your LPG connection or apply for a new one with your rent agreement as address proof.
  • Internet: check which broadband providers serve the building before you sign.
  • Electricity: find out whether the flat has a prepaid meter you recharge, or a sub-meter the owner bills.
  • Rent receipts: keep one every month for your HRA claim. Renters with us download them from the Anvi Homes app.
