Room on Rent in Patna on a Budget: How to Find an Affordable Room
By Anvi Homes · · 5 min read
Most people searching for a room in Patna have a firm budget, often a few thousand rupees a month. Rooms at that level exist, but you find them by knowing what pushes rent up or down, and by comparing the full monthly cost rather than the rent alone.
What makes a room cheaper
- Sharing: a bed in a shared room costs much less than a room to yourself.
- An older building, or a room on the top floor of a house without a lift.
- A shared bathroom instead of an attached one.
- Unfurnished: bring your own bed and table.
- Being a little away from the main road, or a short auto ride from your college or office.
Where to look
Rooms tend to cost less in the older student belt around Musallahpur, Mahendru and Ashok Rajpath, in the inner lanes of Kankarbagh and Rajendra Nagar, and around Phulwari Sharif. Rooms right on Boring Road or near Gandhi Maidan cost more for the convenience. Our guide to Patna's areas compares them.
Count the full monthly cost
A low rent can hide other costs. Before you agree, ask about each of these:
- Electricity: a separate meter, a per-unit rate from a sub-meter, or a fixed share?
- Water, Wi-Fi and maintenance: included or extra?
- Deposit: how many months, and when it is returned.
- Any charge for a cooler, AC or extra furniture.
Avoid these mistakes
Not sure whether a shared room, single room or PG suits you? Read PG, hostel or rented room in Patna.
- Paying a deposit or "token" before seeing the room in person.
- Moving in without a written agreement or receipts.
- Choosing a room far from class to save a little, then spending it on autos every day.
